Engineering Introduction in Pre-Calculus Courses

چکیده
The freshman engineering program at the University of Tennessee consists of two 4 hour courses, Physics for Engineers I and II. Calculus I or higher is a co-requisite for Physics for Engineers I. The content of the Physics for Engineers courses is an introduction to engineering physics (approximately the first 20-25 chapters of an introductory engineering physics textbook), and an introduction to elements of successful engineering practice (teamwork, engineering design, and communication). Significant effort has been put into these courses, and the courses have been shown to increase retention in engineering (Parsons et al, 2002; Parsons et al, 2008).

These notes provide an introduction to stochastic calculus, the branch of mathematics that is most identified with financial engineering and mathematical finance. We will ignore most of the “technical” details and take an “engineering” approach to the subject. We will cover more material than is strictly necessary for this course. Any material that is not required, however, should be of value f...
متن کاملAssessing Impact of Engineering Projects in Community Service on Engi- neering Freshmen Enrolled in Pre-Calculus
This work-in-progress describes a novel approach to support freshman engineering students entering college with low math competencies in pre-calculus. Institutions across the nation are making significant efforts to develop K-12 programs and summer camps to recruit more ethnic minorities into engineering to better support the growing needs for diversity in industry workforce. However, while a d...
متن کاملReformed Calculus Curriculum Impact on Learning Performance of Engineering Mathematics with Data Analysis
Both pros and cons of calculus reform have been widely discussed since late 1980’s. In spite of arguments are poles apart, calculus reform is still discussed worldwide. The students of Taiwanese university of technology usually have a high failure rate in calculus, thereby affecting the performance of advanced application courses. Through calculus curriculum development of this study, students ...
متن کاملThe Case for Biocalculus: Design, Retention, and Student Performance
Calculus is one of the primary avenues for initial quantitative training of students in all science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields, but life science students have been found to underperform in the traditional calculus setting. As a result, and because of perceived lack of its contribution to the understanding of biology, calculus is being actively cut from biology program requ...
متن کاملAn Evaluation of a Learning Community Program for Freshman Engineering Students
This paper discusses a pilot program for a freshman engineering learning community at Binghamton University. The engineering learning community program is an integration of three courses, an introduction to engineering course, a technical writing course, and a calculus course, for students who reside in the same campus residence hall. The main objectives of the program are to improve student re...
